Abstract
This research investigated the case of students’ low ability in accomplishing
some tests related to algebra in Senior High School 3 of Padangsidimpuan. The
aim of this research was to describe students’ mistakes of grade VII.1 Junior High
School 3 of Padangsidimpuan in accomplishing some problems related to algebra
concepts and to describe students’ understanding toward the algebra concepts of
students grade VII.1 Junior High School 3 of Padangsidimpuan.
This research applied descriptive method. The informants of the research
were students grade VII.1 Junior High School 3 of Padangsidimpuan in term
2013/2014 which consisted of 35 students. Then, the instruments used to collect
the data were tests and interview. Moreover, the data was analysed using
qualitative data analysis.
Based on the research result, it was found that: 1) students’ mistakes in
accomplishing algebra concepts are: some students can not identify the variables of
algebra, some students can not identify the coefficient of algebra variables, several
students can not identify the constanta of algebra, several students make mistakes
in identifying the examples of algebra concepts, several students can not make
common sentences related to math, and several students can not simplify algebra
patterns through grouping its similar parts. 2) Students’ understanding toward
algebra concepts is categorized as good. However, there are some students who
have difficulties in it.
