In Medan, for example, there are no more community leaders from traditional elements, community leaders only consist of scholars who play an active role in the community. Besides that, modernization also influences the role of adat. The emergence of formal institutions such as the Office of Religious Affairs and Majlis Ulama Indonesia has also taken over traditional roles. Besides that there are also religious leaders who are also indigenous figure. For this category, tradition still plays a role but is supported by religion (Islam)
