Abstract
This study is aimed to track out and to describe the traces of Islamic civilization
in Barus. In this study, the writer used a multidisciplinary/interconnective
approach with historical, archaelogical, and sociological method. Barus is one
of the famous ancient city in Asia with the various Islamic civilizations. Barus is
not only known as a producer of camphor, which is called Marco Polo Canfora
Fansuri and gold, but also known as the Lobu Tua (Old Lobu) site and the
Hamzah Fansuri. The existence of Barus (Baroussai) has been mentioned by
Claudius Ptolemaeus in the second century AD, and confirmed by Chinese
sources in sixth century AD. Before the ninth century AD, the place called
