Students of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Padangsidimpuan: between motivation and speaking ability

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the first-grade students of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Padangsidimpuan in the relationship of motivation and their speaking ability. It has been done by using the correlational method, with 495 students as the population, and the researcher decided to choose 26 students as the sample. Data have been collected by questionnaire for speaking motivation and spoken test for speaking ability that is taken by video recorded. To analyze the data, the researcher used the product moment formula and t-test. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the mean score of students’ speaking motivation was 72.11, and the mean score of their speaking ability was 70.42. The result showed that there was a correlation between two variables in the very high category. Besides looking at the mean score, the researcher also used product-moment correlation, when r-xy was higher than r-table the hypothesis was accepted, meanwhile if it is lower, the hypothesis was rejected. In this research, it is found that r-xy was higher than the r-table (0.98> 0.388), with a t-test of 24.5 > t-table (0.515). It means the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It was concluded that there was a correlation between speaking motivation and speaking ability of the 1st-semester students’ Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Padangsidimpuan
